The Little Things

Outdoor Concerts

This week I am grateful for:

  • Bike Rides
  • Rock-Climbing Walls
  • Legs that let me run
  • More weekends and evenings off to spend time with my other half
  • Farm fresh eggs
  • Bird-feeders

We have been spending so much time outside that I actually have a base tan. This is unheard of in my world. I am learning more and more that Des Moines really is the MidWest’s best kept secret. Seriously. The cost of living is fairly low compared to other bigger cities and my quality of life has significantly increased. I have time to do things on weeknights and Lance and I get so much accomplished when we are both off of work and at home. It is just simpler.

So this week we have already had two great local experiences.

The first is entitled, Nightfall on the River. It is a beautiful amphitheater outside, right on the river. Something else I have learned to appreciate about Des Moines is the many bridges that run through the middle of town. They just make for some pretty nice scenery. And in this setting, just made the concert a tad more enjoyable. The venus is small, but intimate and there are shows there all summer long, with tickets around $35-45 dollars per show. There is also a food-truck and beer stands, which we did not partake in due to doing a round of whole30 currently. But it sure smelled good!!

The second thing we did was an evening bike ride with one of my college friends we got back in touch with, and other residents of Des Moines. I think there were about 40 of us, but we just all rode together and visited the Des Moines Art Center. We did not have the pleasure of going inside to view the art, but were given a short tour of the outside area, including several sculptures. Lance said, after living here for 4 years, that he didn’t even know it existed. Bonus?? ITS FREE…..!!!! And, it includes some pretty legit art history. Plus, the buildings alone are fun to look at.
