12 Books in 12 Months

Pale Queen Rising & Sharp Objects

June’s book challenge is coming in as a two-fer, and its coming in a little late. But, it is here nonetheless and I am halfway through my challenge for this year!

A month or so ago, one of my closest friends re-introduced me to audiobooks. I have often spent time cleaning, mowing, etc listening to music and in the business of life, I am not always able to sit down and indulge in a good read. So, she suggested I listen to books. I am on the road nearly every day, though my commute is only about 15 minutes each way, and I have a lot of time at home that I could be listening to something more than music. Audiobooks are perfect.

So this month, I have been listening to Sharp Objects. It is by Gillian Flynn (the same writer as the famous Gone Girl). It has been out for 10 years, but I am still loving it. And hey, there are plenty of books I wanted to read 10 years ago that I still haven’t gotten around to. This particular book is about a young journalist who returns to her hometown to investigate and write about a couple of local murders of two young girls. The book talks about Camille’s (the journalist) childhood and the struggles she faced, while also taking the reader through Camille’s realization of what truly happened to her during her childhood. All the while, she is also trying to solve the murders. It is very much the story of a small-town girl who got out of town, returning years later, only to see her home in a completely different light than the one she left it in.

The writer and the narrator create an engaging and suspenseful experience for the listener.  One person plays all of the characters in the book, but the listener is able to distinctly differentiate each of them. I am not finished with this one, but am getting close!!

I have also begun reading one of my friend’s series. A.R. Kahler has recently published his series, The Pale Queen, a spinoff to his series The Immortal Circus. The first book, Pale Queen Rising follows Claire’s story. She is the daughter of Mab, the Winter Queen and a trained assassin. So far, all I know is that Claire has been sent to the Immortal Circus to investigate where some of the dream from the dream-trade is going. Confused? These are young adult fantasy novels with magic and witches and faeries, and the dreams of mortals give them all power. There is also love, manipulation and action. I am totally hooked on this book.  A.R. Kahler has had several books release this year. Check him out 🙂
